House Extension in Harborne, Birmingham

This Harborne house extension was designed to improve the way the home works for modern family life while respecting the character of the original property.

Previously separated ground-floor rooms were opened up and reorganised to form a generous kitchen, dining and informal living space. The new layout creates a much stronger relationship between the principal living areas, allowing everyday activities to take place within one connected but clearly defined room.

A large central island forms the focus of the kitchen, providing additional preparation space, storage and informal seating. Full-height glazed doors open the rear of the property towards the garden, while carefully positioned roof glazing introduces daylight deeper into the plan. Together, these elements create a brighter interior and a more seamless connection between inside and outside.

The contemporary kitchen uses understated grey cabinetry, pale worktops and warm timber finishes to complement the existing house rather than compete with it. Integrated appliances and full-height storage help maintain a clean, uncluttered appearance, while concealed lighting adds warmth and highlights the bespoke shelving within the island.

The wider renovation brought a consistent design language throughout the home. Existing rooms were refreshed with a restrained palette of soft neutrals, charcoal finishes and natural materials. The bathroom was also updated to create a calm, characterful space featuring a freestanding bath, textured finishes and contemporary fittings.

From the street, the traditional appearance of the house remains largely unchanged. To the rear, the extension provides the additional space, natural light and garden connection needed to support contemporary living.

The completed project demonstrates how a sensitive residential extension can significantly improve an existing property without losing the qualities that originally made it distinctive.
